Yuma County is where you’ll find the best neighbors anywhere, just ask Kansas. This northeastern part of Colorado is a wonderful blend of history, modern technology, recreation, abundant natural resources and a view of small town living. Visitors from all over come to Wray to view the unusual mating ritual of the Greater Prairie Chicken. Once an endangered species, the Greater Prairie Chicken has made a comeback in Northeast Colorado. The age-old dance by the male attracts not only female prairie chicken but also humans. Tours are available to view these “Sandhills Dancers” during March and April.

The rolling hills and beautiful small communities in this corner of the world will give you a profound appreciation for small town living and history. The Wray museum has a fine Smithsonian exhibit of an ancient buffalo hunt as well as Indian and prehistoric artifacts. Wander through world-class collections. Visit Beecher Island Battleground, the site of one of the most-bitter battles in the Indian Wars between Cheyenne Dog Soldiers and the US Calvary.

Yuma County offers many opportunities for recreation. Boating and fishing are popular. The ponds, lakes and rivers here are almost as abundant as the wildlife. Hunters and nature lovers will see wild turkey, pheasant and deer. Spend the afternoon at one of the golf courses in Wray or Yuma. This is the boyhood home of US Open Champion Steve Jones. Shopping is not just fun here, it’s therapy.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Yuma in September, visit the Old Threshers Antique machinery and Threshers event. It’s like stepping back in time. This is farm country. Agriculture is still the most important industry here. Yuma County produces more corn that any other county in Colorado.
