Sedgwick County
Towns in County:
Julesburg, Ovid, Sedgwick
Stories about cowboys, cattle rustlers, and pony express,
Indian raids, the early railroad and a famous fort of movie
fame are right here in historic Sedgwick County. Julesburg,
once known as the Wickedest Town in the West, is only the
beginning of this picturesque part of Colorado. The only
home station of the Pony Express, and the actual location
of Fort Sedgwick of Dances with Wolves fame can be seen
along the South Platte River Trail, which meanders through
the county.
Along the way, experience the small-town friendly
atmosphere which Ovid and Sedgwick offer. Meet colorful
characters from history. Thad Sowder, one of the original
riders with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, called this beautiful
area home. Wildlife and recreation is abundant at nearby
Jumbo Reservoir, you won’t believe the sunsets. There are
wonderful, out of the way places to stop for a minute, on
hour or overnight. The town of Sedgwick has hardly changed
since it’s beginning in 1887. Many original building still
exist.
Experience fresh air and plenty of space. Shop for
antiques in downtown Julesburg. Catch a weekend movie in
a vintage theatre. Visit the Old Ford Garage. See original
archived historic documents at the Fort Sedgwick Historical
Society. As part of the Transcontinental Railroad, this
area is rich in railroad history and you’ll still see trains…lots
and lots of trains. Sedgwick County was part of the Overland
State Route to Oregon and California. It carries on the
long tradition as a gateway to the Mountain West welcoming
travelers today as it did long ago. Enjoy exploring Historic
Sedgwick County.
