Amherst, Haxtun, Holyoke, Paoli

Phillips County, on the golden plains of northeastern Colorado, is well known for its small friendly communities. What you will find is pride in their past but with exceptional high quality education and health care services. This is one of the most productive farming and ranching regions in the United States. Many families continue to farm on land that was homesteaded by their relatives more than a hundred years ago. Every town has a grain elevator and in Amherst you’ll find one of the largest concrete style elevators west of the Mississippi.

Haxtun is a small town with a big heart and is home of the Fightin’ Bulldogs. Haxtun is the western part of Phillips County and offers a host of interesting amenities including our National Historic Town Hall, great restaurants, the historic and lush town park, beautiful churches and unique stores. Although we have less than 1,000 people in our town, we have plenty of community events that offer something for everyone! Holyoke is truly a community of “Pride & Progress.”

Holyoke is proud of the wonderful quality of life and cost of living it offers, along with providing all of the essential services. There are numerous community activities, which entertain all age groups and its many visitors. A walking tour is in order in Holyoke where you’ll find a lively downtown with its rebuilt historic movie theatre and various shopping opportunities. Only a block away, the Phillips County Museum houses a rich collection of Indian and pioneer artifacts, farm equipment and restored buildings. The Heginbotham Library, a craftsman’s style bungalow built in 1917, is now the public library. Along with the historic Burge Hotel, the library is on the National Register of Historic Places. Every town has a grain elevator and in Amherst you’ll find one of the largest concrete style grain elevators west of the Mississippi. In Paoli, stop by the elevator for a cup of coffee and visit with the friendly folks. All across the county you will see examples of a deep appreciation for history.

Recreation is just another part of small town living. Swimming pools, newly renovated baseball fields, tennis courts, fishing lakes, campgrounds, libraries, golf courses, shopping and beautiful parks are just a few options. Phillips County is home to a wide variety of wildlife species and over 30,000 acres of walk-in access for hunters. Get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy this peaceful setting with all the amenities.
