Life is a celebration in Elbert County Colorado.
If you are lucky enough to visit Kiowa in June, the
Celtic Festival will fill your soul with music. It’s a
treat for all ages. Kiowa began as a stage station in
1859 during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Today it welcomes
visitors from all over. The Kiowa museum, once a high
school, is now a window to the past. It is filled with
the rich history of this beautiful country. Volunteers
have spent many hours documenting the culture of the
steadfast people who settled this area as well as
displaying a vast collection of vintage photos. Nearby
Elizabeth was founded in 1859. This slow moving small
town offers visitors a peak of the past and a glimpse of
the rich ranching culture that still exists.
Pull up a chair at one of the local eateries or
stroll down the great, restored Main Street. Shopping
here is a treat…in fact it’s almost irresistible, so
plan to spend the whole afternoon. Everywhere you go in
this country you’ll experience a friendly welcome.
Elbert County lies at the eastern base of the Rocky
Mountains. This is the scenic route to Denver and the
Rockies. As you travel west, the hills and rolling
plains give way to the panoramic views of the Black
Forest. It’s evident that cattle ranching and farming
are important to this region. If you are lucky, you will
catch a glimpse of a new type of ranching that has
become popular. There’s a lot to do in the central part
of this county. You can spend plenty of time exploring
sleepy towns, enjoying the scenery, following the trails
of history, or simply taking part in the celebration of
life in Elbert County, Colorado.
